The dining table is where a family sits down together, so it should suit your room and the way your household gathers. Son&Bear dining tables are made to your configuration. Choose a round, rectangular, oval or extendable table with a top in sintered stone or solid ash, on a solid ash base we design ourselves.
We size every Son&Bear table against the room it is going into. As a guide, allow about 600 mm of table edge for each person and 900 mm behind each chair so someone can walk past. Then choose the length for the number of people you usually seat: a 1.6 metre rectangular table seats six, a 2 m dining table seats eight, and the 2.4 by 1.0 metre size seats ten. In an HDB flat or a condominium, a round table can fit a corner where a rectangle would not, and an extendable table stays at its everyday size until guests come over.
Each base affects how the table is used. The Rumi, Alto and Tara stand on panels and plinths set in from the ends, so no one sits with a table leg in the way. The Austin and Juliet are made to take a bench along one side. The Hara, Laura and Ori stand on pedestals, so every chair pulls in the same way, and the Hiro puts an oval top on a fluted drum.
Every table stands on a solid ash base in six finishes, and all but the Alvi can take a top in sintered stone or solid ash. Both are built for real use; they simply age differently. If your household cooks most nights, choose sintered stone: it resists heat, stains and scratching and wipes clean in a single pass. If you want the warmth of wood, choose solid ash, which shows its grain and can be sanded back and re-oiled rather than replaced. To plan a table around your room, pick the shape, size, top, base and finish yourself in Build Your Table, then see the stone and wood side by side at our Ubi showroom.
Allow about 600 mm of table edge for each person, and 900 mm behind each chair so someone can walk past. As a guide, our 1.6 metre rectangular tables seat six, 1.8 metre tables seat six to eight, 2.0 metre tables seat eight and the 2.4 by 1.0 metre size seats ten, while our round tables, from 0.8 to 1.4 metres across, seat two to six. Your chairs and how much elbow room you like decide the real number, so bring your measurements to a Son&Bear showroom before you choose.
For six, choose a 1.6 metre rectangular table such as the Rumi, Alto, Tara or Levin, or a 1.4 metre round such as the Hara, Laura or Ori. For eight, choose the 2.0 metre size of any of our rectangular or oval tables, or a 1.5 metre round extendable such as the Levi, which seats seven to eight. For ten, choose the 2.4 by 1.0 metre Rumi, Tara, Alto, Austin, Hira, Hiro, Juliet or Vara; the Alto Extendable, which opens from 1.6 to 2.3 metres to seat up to ten; or a 1.6 metre round extendable such as the Levi, Lila, Linus, Nora or Alvi, which seats nine to ten.
Yes. The Alto, Austin, Hira, Hiro, Juliet, Levin, Rumi, Tara and Vara all come in a 2.0 metre size, 200 by 80 centimetres, which seats eight as a guide. All of them except the Levin also come in 2.2 metres and in a 2.4 by 1.0 metre size for hosting, and the Alto Extendable opens to 2.0 or 2.3 metres when guests come over.
Every base is solid American ash, in six finishes: Natural Ash, Natural Oak, Walnut, Dark Walnut, Black and White, each applied to the same ash. The top is solid ash or sintered stone on every dining table except the Alvi, which is solid ash only. Day to day, wipe a wood surface with a barely damp cloth and dry it straight after, and simply wipe a sintered stone top clean.
Sintered stone is formed from mineral under heat and pressure. On a Son&Bear dining table, it resists heat, stains and scratching, wipes clean in a single pass, and holds that surface for years. Every Son&Bear dining table except the Alvi can take a sintered stone top.
Our stone designs run from plain, pale surfaces to stone with clear veining, and every one is the same sintered stone, so you are choosing the look only. With a stone top, the wood finish is on the base, in any of our six finishes. A pattern looks different across two metres than it does on a small sample, so it is worth seeing the stone at full size before you decide.
Son&Bear dining tables carry a one-year limited warranty that covers manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship. It does not cover normal wear and tear, such as scratches, dents, watermarks and food stains. It also does not cover damage from misuse, or wood moving naturally with humidity. The full terms are on our warranty page.
Our Singapore showroom is at 8 Ubi Road 2, Zervex #01-07/08, open from 11am to 8pm every day, with no appointment needed. A dining table sits beneath the Design Studio wall, where the wood finishes and stone designs are set side by side, and our team will help you plan the table around your floor plan. Pets are welcome too.
