Bouclé, chenille, suede or leather: how to choose a sofa fabric
In short
Choose a sofa fabric for the way your home is used first, and for the look second. Bouclé and chenille are soft and cosy but less forgiving of claws, Premium Suede and textured fabric give a calmer, flatter surface, Velora brings rich colour, and Son&Bear's Eco-Series leathers wipe clean with a damp cloth, which makes them the practical choice with young children or pets. In hot, humid weather a wipe-clean surface stays fresh easily while a woven fabric feels cooler on bare skin, and every fabric should be kept out of strong direct sun.
The fabric decides how a sofa feels when you sink into it after work, how it copes with a spilled drink at a family dinner, and how it looks after a few years of afternoon sun.
This guide walks through the main fabrics Son&Bear offers (bouclé, chenille, Premium Suede, Velora, textured fabric and the Eco-Series leathers) and how each one feels, wears and cleans. The same trade-offs apply to any sofa, wherever you buy it. Most Son&Bear sofas are offered in a choice of these fabrics. The questions below are the ones worth answering before you choose.
What should you decide before choosing a sofa fabric?
Start with who uses the sofa, not with the swatch.
- Children: sticky hands, crayons and jumping. Wipe-clean or tightly woven surfaces are easier to live with.
- Pets: claws catch in loops and pile, and hair works into texture. The Son&Bear guide to pet-friendly sofa materials covers this in detail.
- Heat: do you sit on it in shorts with the air-conditioning off?
- Sunlight: a sofa beside a west-facing window sees far more sun than one against an inner wall.
- Care: some fabrics want a weekly brush; others need only a cloth when something happens.
Then let look and feel decide the rest.
Bouclé vs chenille: what is the difference?
Both are soft and inviting, but they are built differently.
Bouclé is woven from looped yarn, which gives it a nubby, matte texture. It feels soft and cocooning and reads as quietly textural rather than shiny. It is Son&Bear's signature fabric, with a water-repellent weave, so a spill can be blotted before it soaks in; day-to-day care is a gentle vacuum. The loops are its weak point: claws, hook-and-loop fasteners and rough jewellery can catch them.
Chenille has a velvety pile that gives under your hand, with a soft sheen that shifts with the light. Colours look richer and warmer in it, and it softens both light and sound in a room. Care is a soft-brush vacuum, and spills should be blotted, never rubbed. Like any pile, it can show shading where people sit often.
Choose bouclé for texture and a calm, matte look, and chenille for deeper colour and a plusher feel. If you have a cat that scratches, neither is the right choice.
How do Premium Suede, Velora and textured fabric compare?
Premium Suede gives you the brushed hand of classic suede in a water-repellent microfibre. It feels cool to the touch and looks matte and even, so it suits people who like a calm, smooth surface that stays tidy. Brush it with the nap to refresh it, and use a water-based cleaner for marks. Like any brushed surface, it shows hand marks where the nap is pushed the other way, until you brush it back.
Velora is dense and smooth, with rich colour and a subtle two-tone depth. Choose it when you want colour to lead in an otherwise quiet room. Velora colours are chosen from the swatches at the showroom. Care is a gentle vacuum, blotting any spill early.
Textured fabric is a fine, even woven upholstery with a soft matte finish. It is understated, and its everyday care is a soft brush once a week. It is offered on selected models, such as the Anderson.
Where does the Eco-Series fit in?
The Eco-Series is Son&Bear's family of three leathers: Eco-Lux, Eco-Tex and Eco-Prime. They are water-resistant, scratch-resistant and clean with a damp cloth, and they are the only materials Son&Bear calls pet-friendly. They are child-friendly too: crayon marks wipe off the same way. Eco-Lux is ultra-soft, Eco-Tex has a structured lychee grain, and Eco-Prime has a soft matte finish with vintage-inspired warmth. The Materials page lets you compare them.
How do the sofa fabrics compare?
| Fabric | How it feels | How it looks | Everyday care | With children and pets |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bouclé | Soft, looped, cocooning | Nubby and matte | Vacuum gently; blot spills | Water-repellent weave helps with spills; loops can catch on claws |
| Chenille | A velvety pile that gives under your hand | A soft sheen that shifts with the light | Soft-brush vacuum; blot, never rub | Hair clings to the pile and claws can pull it |
| Premium Suede | Brushed, cool to the touch | Matte and even | Brush with the nap; water-based cleaner | A flat surface gives claws less to catch, but it still marks |
| Velora | Dense and smooth | Rich colour with two-tone depth | Vacuum gently; blot spills early | Better in calmer homes; not called pet-friendly |
| Textured fabric | A fine, even weave | Soft matte | Soft brush weekly | A tight weave copes better than loops or pile |
| Eco-Series | Ultra-soft, grained or matte | From clean and smooth to aged-leather character | Wipe with a damp cloth | The only materials Son&Bear calls pet-friendly; child-friendly |
Which sofa fabric suits humid weather?
Singapore's heat and humidity raise two separate questions: how the sofa feels against your skin, and how it copes with moisture.
On the skin, an open woven fabric breathes, so it feels cooler on bare legs when the air-conditioning is off. A smooth leather-type surface does not breathe in the same way, so on a hot afternoon it can feel warm and slightly sticky until the room cools. In an air-conditioned room, the difference is small.
With moisture, the advantage swings the other way. Fabric takes in sweat, spills and humidity, and in a room that stays damp it can start to smell musty. The Eco-Series is water-resistant, so spills and sweat can be wiped off the surface. Son&Bear's bouclé and Premium Suede are both water-repellent, which buys you time with spills.
Whatever you choose, keep the sofa away from damp corners and let the room ventilate. If you rarely run the air-conditioning, a breathable fabric may suit you better than leather.
How do you protect a sofa from sunlight?
Any upholstery can change colour in strong, direct sun over time, and deep, rich colours tend to show it first. Keep the sofa out of direct sun where you can, draw the blinds in the hottest part of the day, and think twice about a deep Velora or chenille beside an unshaded window.
How should you clean a fabric sofa?
Deal with spills while they are fresh, blot rather than rub, and give each fabric the care in the table above. Avoid detergents, bleach, alcohol-based solvents and abrasive cleaners, because they can damage upholstery. Son&Bear's warranty does not cover damage caused by harsh cleaning agents, or colour change caused by sunlight and moisture. If a stain will not lift with the usual care, message the Son&Bear team before trying anything stronger.
See it in person
A fabric is much easier to choose by touch than on a screen. Bouclé, chenille, Premium Suede, Velora and the three Eco-Series leathers are all on the swatch wall at the Son&Bear showroom in Ubi, 8 Ubi Road 2, Zervex #01-07/08. It is open from 11am to 8pm every day, with parking right outside and Tai Seng, Ubi and MacPherson MRT stations nearby.
Sit on a few sofas, run your hand across each weave, and take your time. Bring photos or measurements of your HDB flat or condo and the team will help you work out what fits. No appointment is needed, and pets are welcome.
Frequently asked questions
Is fabric piling on a sofa a defect?
No. Small balls of fibre can form on most upholstery fabrics where they rub against clothes and skin, and Son&Bear's warranty treats fabric piling, like cushions softening over time, as normal wear rather than a defect.
Can I choose Velora and other fabric colours online?
Bouclé, chenille, Premium Suede, Velora and the three Eco-Series leathers each come in a range of colourways, from quiet neutrals to deeper tones, and Son&Bear suggests choosing yours in person, because colours can vary slightly on screen. The full range of swatches is kept at the showrooms, and Velora's colours in particular are chosen there.
Is every fabric offered on every Son&Bear sofa?
No. The choice differs from model to model, and most sofa pages list the fabrics offered. Textured fabric appears on selected models such as the Anderson, Marcel, Milo and Stella sofas, and some models, such as the Bellingham, also offer Bouclé Velvet and Scandi fabric. If you want to see one of these in person, message the showroom first to check the swatch is there.
Can I match my dining chairs to my sofa fabric?
Partly. Son&Bear dining chairs have solid wood frames and seats in a woven fabric, Eco-Lux or Velora, so Eco-Lux and Velora can carry through from the sofa to the table. It is easiest to match colours with the swatches side by side at the showroom.
